INTRODUCTION TO THE IFMA

IFMA was formed in 1974 at the 2nd International Farm Management Congress in Quelph, Canada. The first Congress was held in Warwick, UK in 1971.  The next Congress to be held will be in July, 2017, which will be the 21st IFMA Congress and take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.  IFMA is a not-for-profit organisation with no paid staff.

IFMA’s MISSION STATEMENT

“To provide a forum for farmers, researchers, advisors, consultants and administrators from around the world for the exchange of knowledge and innovative strategies on the changing role of management in agricultural production and related businesses.”

This will be achieved through Congresses, the International Journal of Agricultural Management (IJAM), the IFMA website,  papers, articles, newsletters, and by encouraging communication between members across the world.

  • Congresses are held every second year around the world – 2005 in Brazil, 2007 in Ireland, 2009 in USA, 2011 in New Zealand, 2013 in Poland and 2015 in Quebec, Canada, with Edinburgh, UK due in 2017.  The full congress proceedings are published on this website.
  • The new Journal of Agricultural Managment (IJAM) replaces the JIFM Journal, which was recently launched as an online Journal published on a professional journal website and is available to members and all who are interested in farm management issues with papers from all round the world.
  • Ifmaonline.org website is the main resource for disseminating farm management knowledge – now being recognized as an important centre by farm management organisations, leading universities and online libraries.
  • Links to National & Regional Farm Management Organisations have been formed and include the lead organisations in many countries and continents such as the American Society of  Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers, the African Farm Management Association, the Australasian Farm Business Management Network,  Farm Management Canada, the Institute of Agricultural Management (UK), the New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management, the International Association of Agricultural Economists and several country AgEcon Societies and more.

WHY YOUR ORGANISATION SHOULD SPONSOR THE IFMA

WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT COMPETENCY YOUR CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE?

No matter which product your organisation supplies to the farming industry, the answer has to be “the ability to manage their farming activities”.

  • This is as true for the peasant farmer trying to develop into commercial activity as it is for the large farmer or farming company.
  • Small or large the demands on “the manager” have changed and increased in dimension hugely with serious consequences for failure.
  • The avoidance of disease – the safe and appropriate use of chemicals – food safety – food quality – staff – environment – business – marketing – finance – all require better management skills than ever before.
  • Education and training resources are limited – governments in developed countries have reduced their funding – and those in developing countries often lack the resources and will to provide them.

IFMA mitigates these problems by offering a unique resource – Online and via Congresses – for the exchange of knowledge, expertise, ideas and strategies to cope with today’s demands for increased food production, higher quality and greater safety standards.

IFMA knows it can do so much more to help meet the farm management needs of a fast changing world. With your company’s help it will be able to do so.

We hope you will wish to link your company to these objectives and support IFMA in its endeavors to improve farm management world wide! It certainly has an important role to play to meet the world’s needs!
